Ghanaian stars impress across Europe and beyond – Weekend wrap-up

Ghanaian footballers delivered several standout performances across various leagues worldwide over the weekend, with a number of players getting on the scoresheet while others played key roles for their clubs.

From Europe’s top divisions to leagues in North America and beyond, Ghanaian talents continued to leave their mark as they push to strengthen their chances ahead of upcoming international assignments.

Goalscorers lead the way

Midfielder Augustine Boakye produced a moment of brilliance for St. Etienne, finding the back of the net in their narrow 2-1 victory over Laval in the French Ligue II.

In Austria, Daniel Nunoo also made headlines after scoring in Rapid Vienna’s 2-0 triumph against Wolfsberger AC in the Austrian Bundesliga.

Over in Denmark, Bismark Edjeodji was among the goals for Vejle, netting in their thrilling 3-3 draw with Nordsjaelland.

Meanwhile, experienced midfielder Kwasi Donsu came off the bench to score for Tarxien, though his effort was not enough to prevent a 2-1 defeat to Naxxar in the Maltese top-flight.

In Italy, striker Caleb Ekuban continued his fine form, scoring for Genoa as they secured an emphatic 3-0 victory over Torino in Serie A.

England

In the Premier League, forward Antoine Semenyo featured prominently, playing 87 minutes for Manchester City in their 2-1 win over Newcastle United.

Elsewhere in the Championship, Brandon Thomas-Asante made a late appearance for Coventry City, playing 13 minutes in their 2-0 victory against West Bromwich Albion.

Young winger Ibrahim Osman also featured, coming on to play 28 minutes for Birmingham City in their 2-1 win over Norwich City.

Spain

Several Ghanaian players were in action across Spain’s top flight.

Midfielder Kwasi Sibo logged 76 minutes for Real Oviedo in their entertaining 3-3 draw with Real Sociedad.

Forward Inaki Williams featured for Athletic Bilbao, playing 80 minutes in their 2-1 win over Elche.

Midfield powerhouse Thomas Partey made a substitute appearance, playing 33 minutes for Villarreal in their 2-1 victory over Valencia.

Defender Joseph Aidoo completed the full match for Celta Vigo as they secured a 2-0 win against Mallorca.

Italy

In addition to Ekuban’s goal for Genoa, Ibrahim Sulemana delivered a strong performance, playing all 90 minutes for Cagliari in their draw against Lazio.

Winger Kamaldeen Sulemana also featured, playing 46 minutes for Atalanta in their 2-1 victory over Napoli.

In Serie B, midfielder Alfred Duncan was involved in Venezia’s 3-2 win over Pescara, while Emmanuel Gyasi made a substitute appearance, playing 26 minutes for Palermo in their 3-0 victory over Sudtirol.

France

In Ligue 1, Terry Yegbe featured for Metz in their 3-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

The Ghanaian pair Elisha Owusu and Gideon Mensah were both involved as Auxerre suffered a 3-0 loss to Rennes.

Defender Kojo Peprah delivered a solid display for Nice in their 3-3 draw against Lorient.

Back in Ligue II, goalscorer Augustine Boakye also had compatriot Ebenezer Annan alongside him in action for St. Etienne.

Germany

In the Bundesliga, Derrick Kohn featured as Union Berlin claimed a 1-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen.

Young defender Jonas Adjetey made a brief cameo for Wolfsburg in their 3-2 loss to Augsburg.

Forward Ransford-Yeboah Konigsdorffer played 87 minutes for Hamburg in their 1-1 draw with Mainz.

In Bundesliga II, Patrick Pfeiffer helped Darmstadt secure a 2-1 win against Fortuna Dusseldorf.

Jan Gyamerah contributed with an assist for Elversberg in their 3-1 victory over Braunschweig, while Stephan Ambrosius returned to action for Karlsruher in their 3-1 win against Holstein Kiel.

Forward Aaron Opoku also found the net for Eintracht Braunschweig, though his side eventually fell to Elversberg.

Austria

Kelvin Boateng made a short appearance for Austria Vienna, playing 15 minutes in their 2-1 defeat to Altach.

Goalscorer Daniel Nunoo impressed for Rapid Vienna, while David Atanga featured briefly for Wolfsberger AC, playing 11 minutes.

Emmanuel Baidoo also saw significant action, playing 84 minutes for Salzburg in their 5-1 win over LASK.

Belgium

In the Jupiler Pro League, Mohammed Fuseini played 87 minutes for Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in their 2-1 win against Antwerp.

Midfielder Lawrence Agyekum featured for Cercle Brugge in their 1-0 victory over Gent.

Jerry Afriyie and Majeed Ashimeru both appeared for RAA La Louviere, though their side fell 2-0 to KV Mechelen.

Joseph Opoku also featured, playing 79 minutes for Zulte Waregem in their 4-2 defeat to Anderlecht.

Other leagues

Across Europe and beyond, several Ghanaian players also enjoyed minutes on the pitch.

In Cyprus, Emmanuel Lomotey featured for Achnas, while Braydon Marvin Manu played 71 minutes in Akritas Chloraka’s 3-1 victory over Omonia Nicosia.

In Greece, experienced defender Abdul Baba Rahman was in action for PAOK in their 1-1 draw against AEL Larissa.

In Israel, Yaw Ackah completed 90 minutes for Shmona in their 1-0 win over Hapoel Jerusalem, while compatriots Eugene Ansah, Hayford Boahen, Matthew Cudjoe, and Emmanuel Boateng also featured for their respective clubs.

In the Netherlands, the trio of Denis Odoi, Kamal Sowah, and Andre Ayew helped NAC Breda secure a 1-0 victory over FC Volendam.

In Saudi Arabia, Christopher Bonsu Baah featured for Al Qadsiah in their 4-2 win over Al Okhdood.

In Romania, Nana Boateng played for Petrolul in their 2-1 defeat to CFR Cluj.

Several Ghanaian players were also active in Serbia, including Douglas Owusu, who featured for Crvena Zvezda in their 3-0 win over Partizan.

In Slovakia, Rahim Ibrahim played 18 minutes for Slovan Bratislava in their 2-2 draw against Ruzomberok.

Goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi also featured in the Swiss Super League, helping St. Gallen to a 1-1 draw with Servette.

Turkey, Ukraine and the USA

In Turkey, defender Jerome Opoku completed 90 minutes for Basaksehir in their 2-1 win over Alanyaspor, while Musah Mohammed played 23 minutes for Goztepe in their 4-0 loss to Besiktas.

In Ukraine, Mark Assinor delivered a man-of-the-match performance to guide LNZ Cherkasy to an important away victory over Epitsentr Kamianets-Podilskyi.

Across the Atlantic in Major League Soccer, several Ghanaian players also featured.

Ezekiel Alladoh played 59 minutes for Philadelphia Union in their 1-0 defeat to DC United, while Ronald Donkor was involved in New York Red Bulls’ 2-1 win over Orlando City.

Maxwell Woledzi helped Nashville SC record a convincing 4-1 victory over New England Revolution, and Manu Duah completed the full match for San Diego FC in their emphatic 5-0 win against CF Montreal.

Prince-Osei Owusu and Kwaku Agyabeng also featured for CF Montreal and Sporting Kansas City respectively during the weekend’s MLS fixtures.
