Director General of the National Sports Authority, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has thrown his weight behind a potential return for Andre Ayew to Ghana’s squad ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting the seasoned forward still has plenty to offer on the international stage.

The conversation around Ayew’s inclusion has reignited in recent weeks, dividing opinion among fans and analysts. While some argue that it is time to fully transition to a younger core, others maintain that his leadership, composure, and wealth of experience remain invaluable assets for the Black Stars.

After more than a year away from the national team setup, Ayew has worked his way back into competitive football following a prolonged absence. His recent move to NAC Breda in the Dutch Eredivisie has seen him quickly regain rhythm, strengthening his case for a recall at a crucial time.

During the tenure of former head coach Otto Addo, Ayew found opportunities limited and was frequently left out of selections.

However, changes within the technical structure have reopened the door for the veteran attacker as Ghana gears up for the global showpiece.

Ampofo Ankrah believes Ayew’s presence could prove pivotal, especially given the intensity of the group stage fixtures.

Reward loyalty and commitment – Ghana MP pushes for Andre Ayew’s World Cup call-up

“If Andre Ayew is fit, he should be included in the Black Stars squad for the World Cup because he is Ghana’s most experienced player,” he noted.

Ghana faces a stern test in Group action, where they are set to battle England national football team, Croatia national football team, and Panama national football team. The Black Stars will kick off their campaign on June 17 in Toronto, with preparations already gathering momentum as the tournament draws closer.
