Former Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu has weighed in on the growing conversation surrounding a potential national team comeback for veteran forward André Ayew.

The ex-Ghana international believes Ayew’s recent form in club football could justify a return to the Ghana national football team setup as preparations gradually build toward the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking in an interview with Citi Sports, Agyemang-Badu explained that Ayew’s performances and goalscoring run make him a legitimate option for the national side, provided he fits into the tactical blueprint of head coach Otto Addo.

Reward loyalty and commitment – Ghana MP pushes for Andre Ayew’s World Cup call-up

“My brother Andre Ayew is playing well and scoring goals, so if the coach thinks his philosophy and game plan will fit him, then why not,” Agyemang-Badu remarked.

Ayew’s resurgence comes after his recent move to Dutch club NAC Breda, where he made headlines by scoring in an entertaining 3-3 stalemate against Dutch giants Feyenoord.

The goal has reignited debate among fans and pundits about whether the seasoned attacker, who remains Ghana’s most-capped player, could still play a leadership role as the team targets success on football’s biggest stage in North America.

Despite voicing support for Ayew’s potential return, Agyemang-Badu stressed that national team selection is not automatic and ultimately lies in the hands of the technical bench.

While advocating for the captain’s inclusion, Agyemang-Badu clarified that a national team call-up is a “privilege and not compulsory,” emphasizing that the final decision remains with the technical team.

Ayew has made nine league appearances for NAC Breda so far this season and has started the club’s last four matches. His most recent appearance for the Black Stars came two years ago, leaving uncertainty over whether the experienced forward could once again wear the national colours.
