Alexander Djiku rose to the occasion when it mattered most, calmly converting his penalty to propel Spartak Moscow into the Russian Cup final after a tense shootout victory over Zenit St Petersburg.

The semi-final clash proved to be a tightly contested affair, with neither side able to find a breakthrough across 90 minutes. Despite flashes of attacking intent, both defenses stood firm, forcing the match into penalties after a goalless draw.

Djiku, who played every minute of the encounter, demonstrated composure under pressure during the shootout as Spartak eventually triumphed 7-6. His successful spot-kick capped a disciplined and resilient performance at the heart of the defense.

Spartak had an earlier opportunity to seize control of the match in regulation time, but Esequiel Omar Barco failed to convert from the penalty spot just before halftime, leaving the contest finely balanced.

At the back, Djiku formed a formidable partnership with Christian Wooh, effectively neutralizing Zenit’s attacking threats, including forward Jhon Duran. Their defensive solidity ensured Spartak remained in the contest throughout.

“Great win tonight. Proud of the team and the spirit we showed. These are the moments we live for, especially in derby games. Let’s keep going!” posted Djiku after the game.

The victory sets up a high-stakes final showdown, with Spartak set to face fierce city rivals CSKA Moscow.

Since his move from Fenerbahce, Djiku has quickly established himself as a cornerstone of Spartak’s defense. Now, the Ghanaian international stands on the brink of securing the first major silverware of his professional career.
