A fresh debate over squad selection for the 2026 FIFA World Cup has emerged in Ghana, with Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Eric Edem Agbana publicly advocating for veteran forward Andre Ayew to be included in the national team.

Speaking during an interview on Eyewitness News, Agbana emphasized that long-standing service to the national team should not be overlooked when decisions are made about the final squad.

While acknowledging that the ultimate authority lies with Black Stars head coach Otto Addo, the legislator insisted that Ayew’s commitment over the years deserves recognition.

“We need to reward sacrifice, hard work and loyalty. Andre Ayew has shown enormous commitment to the Black Stars, and I believe he should be included,” Agbana said.

The experienced attacker, now 36, recently reminded critics of his enduring quality after netting his first goal for Dutch club NAC Breda. The strike has added fuel to the ongoing discussion about whether the long-serving forward still has a role to play on the global stage.

Agbana also reflected on past decisions involving the national team, pointing to former winger Laryea Kingston as an example of a player who was unfortunate to miss out on the sport’s biggest tournament despite his contribution during qualification campaigns:

“One of my regrets is that Laryea Kingston did not get the chance to play. He fought hard during qualification and should have been included.”

Beyond the Ayew debate, the MP also voiced concerns about players who previously turned down opportunities to represent Ghana but later attempt to return to the fold when major tournaments approach.

Ayew, who remains the most capped player in Ghana’s history and once captained the national side, continues to divide opinion among supporters and analysts alike as coach Otto Addo prepares to finalize his squad for the upcoming World Cup.
