Dutch-born forward Ernest Poku has moved to clear the air regarding speculation about a potential switch to represent Ghana, insisting that no formal communication has been made by the Ghana Football Association.

The highly rated attacker, currently on the books of Bayer Leverkusen, disclosed that while there has been chatter suggesting interest from Ghana, none of it has come through official channels. Instead, he has been inundated with messages from individuals claiming to represent the federation, an approach he finds both confusing and unconvincing.

Poku revealed that he has taken steps to shut down such informal communication, choosing to rely solely on his management team for any legitimate international discussions:

“I did hear some things from Ghana, but that’s fifteen people who message me and say they work there. In the end, you don’t know what to believe. I have indicated that they should not communicate with me. If so, I’ll hear it from my agent.”

Despite the noise, the 22-year-old remains a player in demand on the international stage. Having progressed through the Dutch youth ranks with more than 25 appearances, he is still eligible to represent multiple nations, including the Netherlands and Germany.

Since sealing a €12 million transfer from AZ Alkmaar to Leverkusen, Poku’s career trajectory has continued to climb. His performances in Germany, where he has registered five goals and seven assists this season, have only heightened interest in his international future.

Although he maintains a deep-rooted connection to Ghana and is fluent in Twi, Poku is in no rush to make a definitive decision. For now, he remains patient, awaiting formal engagement before committing to any national team.

“Netherlands, Ghana and Germany are also options, but I haven’t heard from all three yet. I can only wait…”
