Willie Klutse has delivered a stinging critique of the people around Thomas Partey, arguing that poor guidance and weak mentorship may have played a damaging role in the Ghanaian midfielder’s current predicament if the accusations levelled against him are proven to be true.
The former Black Stars midfielder and a member of Ghana’s 1978 Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad spoke to Citi Sports after the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service confirmed that Partey is facing two additional rape charges.
Klutse painted a stark picture of how elite footballers can unravel when they rise quickly without strong structures to keep them grounded.
“About Partey, the guy is going through the most difficult times in his football career, and these are some of the things when you are a star you go through sometimes if you are not disciplined,” Klutse said.

In his view, the failure stretches beyond the individual to those entrusted with protecting and guiding him. Klutse suggested that a player’s technical and management team has a duty to help navigate the pressures and temptations that come with stardom, particularly for young Africans moving abroad early in their careers:
“If you don’t have a very good technical team that will control that kind of situation, they get into trouble. I’m sure, when Partey got to Europe, he didn’t have a good mentor or guidance who advised him.”
Drawing from his own experiences in football, Klutse stressed how easily success can distort judgment when there is no steadying influence nearby. Fame, wealth and freedom, he warned, can become a dangerous mix without firm boundaries and trusted counsel.
“So, if all they are saying is true, then his managers didn’t help him. If they are true, really true, then his managers in Europe didn’t help him. They let him feel free, and he thinks, with his fame, he can do what he likes,” he added.
Partey, now 32, has denied all allegations and is scheduled to appear in court in November 2026. The case involves claims from four women, with the latest charges linked to an alleged incident in 2020. His lawyer, Jenny Wiltshire, says the midfielder maintains his innocence and has cooperated fully with investigators.

The Ghana international remains on bail, under conditions that require him to inform police at least 24 hours before any overseas travel and to avoid any form of contact with the complainants. He continues to feature in La Liga with Villarreal and, for now, remains available for Black Stars consideration ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
