Ghanaian midfield general Thomas Partey is heading toward the end of his brief stay at Villarreal, with Footy-Africa learning that the experienced star is unlikely to remain at the Spanish club beyond the 2025/26 campaign.

The 32-year-old arrived at the Estadio de la Cerámica last summer on a short-term agreement following the conclusion of his five-year stint with Arsenal. While his deal includes an option for an additional season, insiders close to the situation suggest that Partey is not inclined to take it up unless there is a dramatic shift in circumstances, as he prepares to seek a different challenge once the season wraps up.

Since pulling on the Yellow Submarine shirt, Partey has quickly established himself as a trusted figure in Marcelino’s midfield. The former Atletico Madrid powerhouse has started seven La Liga matches, logging 654 minutes in the league, while also featuring three times in the UEFA Champions League, where his calmness and tactical awareness have added a layer of maturity to Villarreal’s European push.

Away from club duty, Partey continues to be one of the pillars of Ghana’s national team. With 16 goals from 56 appearances for the Black Stars, he remains a central figure in Otto Addo’s plans and is widely expected to be included in Ghana’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he is also tipped to serve as vice captain.

With the campaign still unfolding, speculation is already beginning to grow around Partey’s next destination.

Despite being in the latter stages of his career, his pedigree, leadership and top-level experience ensure he remains a highly sought-after option for ambitious clubs looking to add steel and know-how to their midfield.
