Ghana captain Jordan Ayew has backed the core group of players who steered the Black Stars to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, indicating that sweeping changes to the squad may not be necessary before the global tournament.

The experienced forward believes the players who featured prominently during the qualification campaign have already demonstrated their quality and commitment, and should remain the backbone of the team heading into the finals.

Ayew made the remarks in an interview with Adom Sports, where he reflected on Ghana’s impressive run toward qualification. The Black Stars ended the campaign strongly, collecting five victories and one draw in their final six matches to seal their place at the tournament.

“I think the players who played during the qualifiers have done extremely well. I don’t think we need any additions,” he stated.

Ayew emphasised that the current squad has been steadily improving and building chemistry despite limited time together in camp:

“I believe we have a good team, and, as time goes on, we are improving. We haven’t had much time to train together, but the unity is getting better and everything is improving.”

The four-time African champions have been placed in a challenging Group L for the 2026 World Cup, where they will face England, Panama and Croatia. The tournament will take place from June 11 to July 19 across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Despite his confidence in the existing group, Ayew acknowledged that decisions regarding the final squad ultimately lie with head coach Otto Addo and his technical staff.

“I don’t think this is the right time to make changes. But to be honest, on the technical side, the coach will know whom to add or select,” he said.

“Whoever is added must be ready to give their all and put on a show.”

Otto Addo urged to prioritize form over loyalty in Black Stars’ World Cup squad

Ghana will begin their World Cup campaign against Panama in Toronto before taking on England in Boston and Croatia in Philadelphia as they aim to make a strong impression on football’s biggest stage.
