Benjamin Asare says he is mentally prepared to come up against some of the most dangerous attackers in world football at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting that belief and confidence will be key when Ghana takes to the global stage.
The Ghana national football team goalkeeper has enjoyed a rapid rise since making his senior debut in March 2025, cementing his place as the Black Stars’ number one with a string of assured performances.
With the tournament approaching, many expect the Accra Hearts of Oak SC shot-stopper to remain Ghana’s first-choice keeper heading into the competition.
Ghana faces a difficult challenge in Group L, where they will battle England, Croatia and Panama for qualification to the knockout stage.
Despite concerns from sections of supporters over his experience at the highest level, Asare says criticism is inevitable once a player reaches elite football.
“They say it always, but it’s their opinion. The moment you reach this level, people will say a lot of things,” he said.
The former Great Olympics goalkeeper acknowledged the immense quality of forwards he could face, including England captain Harry Kane, but pointed out that even the world’s finest goalkeepers struggle to keep out elite strikers consistently.
“Although by God’s grace I’ve reached this level, some of these players also play against top goalkeepers, who even concede. So how much more me, now making strides thanks to God,” Asare explained.
The 26-year-old also revealed that the scrutiny surrounding his readiness for the World Cup has only motivated him further rather than creating fear or doubt.
“No, it doesn’t bother me; it rather encourages me because not everyone makes it to this level,” he said.
Asamoah Gyan: Panama clash will shape Ghana’s World Cup journey
Beyond personal success, Asare believes the tournament presents an opportunity to improve the image of African goalkeepers on the world scene while also creating a lasting legacy for himself and his loved ones.
“Personally, I’m okay and focused on my career. I want to get a good standing in the world so that this Ghanaian or African goalkeeper is very good. Or get a big achievement for myself and family,” he added.
Under the guidance of coach Carlos Queiroz, Ghana will begin its World Cup journey against Panama on June 17 before taking on England on June 23 and Croatia four days later.
As part of preparations for the tournament, the Black Stars are also scheduled to play international friendlies against Mexico and Wales in the coming weeks.
