Legendary Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan believes the Black Stars’ fate at the 2026 FIFA World Cup could hinge on their opening Group L encounter against Panama.

Ghana, who are preparing for their fifth appearance at football’s biggest tournament, have been paired with Panama, England and Croatia in what many observers consider one of the competition’s most unpredictable groups.

Speaking during an appearance on World Cup Central on Channel One TV, Gyan stressed that the Black Stars cannot afford to overlook their first opponents, insisting the Panama fixture could define the mood and direction of the entire campaign.

Herbert Mensah questions Black Stars’ readiness for 2026 World Cup challenge

According to the former captain, securing victory in the opener would hand Ghana a major psychological advantage before facing European heavyweights England and Croatia later in the group stage.

He admitted that, on paper, Ghana may appear stronger than the Central American side, but warned that World Cup qualification alone proves Panama possess quality and should not be underestimated.

Gyan revealed he has been impressed by Panama’s recent performances and urged the Black Stars to approach the contest with total focus and seriousness.

The ex-Sunderland A.F.C. forward described Group L as highly delicate, noting that momentum from the opening fixture could completely transform Ghana’s chances of advancing to the knockout rounds.

He further emphasised that the Black Stars must target all three points rather than settling for a draw, especially with tougher tests against England and Croatia still to come.

Ghana will begin their World Cup adventure against Panama on June 17 before taking on England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

As part of preparations for the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico, the Black Stars will face Mexico in an international friendly on May 22 before concluding their pre-World Cup schedule against Wales on June 2.
