Ghana international Gideon Mensah has wasted little time outlining the scale of his ambition after embarking on a new chapter in Germany with FC Köln.
The 28-year-old left-back completed a two-year move to Köln from French side AJ Auxerre and made an immediate impact, helping the newly arrived defender’s new club edge TSG Hoffenheim 3-2 at the RheinEnergieStadion on Saturday.
While Mensah is still acclimatising to his surroundings, his ambitions are already firmly established. The Ghanaian wants to reproduce the consistency that made him a standout performer in France and force his way into the conversation among the Bundesliga’s finest players in his position.

Speaking to Flashscore, Mensah conceded that Köln was not a club he knew extensively before the transfer, although the Bundesliga itself was certainly familiar territory.
“Before coming here, I didn’t really know too much about Köln. Obviously, I watch the Bundesliga, so I know about the team,” he said.
His transition, however, has been eased by a familiarity with the tactical and physical demands that define German football.
Mensah spent time with Austrian powerhouse Red Bull Salzburg, and that experience, he believes, provided an important foundation for the intensity he has now encountered in the Bundesliga.
“I know a bit about German football because I’ve played in Salzburg and Austrian football is almost like the football in Germany here. We all know about the high pressing, the running and the aggression whenever you watch the Bundesliga.”
The Ghanaian arrives in Germany with his reputation already burnished by four productive seasons at Auxerre, where his reliability and consistency established him as one of Ligue 1’s prominent left-backs.
Rather than treating the Bundesliga as an entirely new challenge, Mensah sees it as an opportunity to raise his profile even further.
“The goal is very clear for me. My years in Auxerre were very good because I became one of the most consistent left-backs in the league. Coming here to Germany, I have the same goal.”
His ambitions, though, stretch beyond simply establishing himself as a regular starter.

Mensah wants to become a recognisable figure in the Bundesliga and believes a strong debut campaign could propel him into the league’s upper echelon at left-back.
“My goal is to help Köln win as much as possible. By the end of my first season, I want everybody to know me as one of the best left-backs in the league.”
His first assignment could hardly have provided a better platform, with Köln opening their campaign by collecting all three points against Hoffenheim.
Mensah will now look to build on that promising beginning when Köln visit VfB Stuttgart at the MHPArena next weekend, as he continues his quest to turn a new club into a new stage for personal recognition.
