Athletic Bilbao boss Ernesto Valverde has expressed concern over Inaki Williams’ fitness, casting doubt on the forward’s availability for Ghana’s upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Williams was forced off the pitch during Bilbao’s 2-1 win against RCD Mallorca at San Mames on Saturday, just moments after ending his recent goal drought. The sight of the 28-year-old limping off midway through the second half left both club and country worried ahead of the international break.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Valverde admitted that it remains unclear whether Williams will recover in time to link up with the Black Stars.
“I don’t know, but I imagine [he won’t go]. I don’t know if they will have to do any tests or what the protocol is, but things are as they are,” the Spanish tactician said, offering a cautious update.
Williams was included in Otto Addo’s 24-man roster for Ghana’s decisive double-header against the Central African Republic and Comoros. However, Valverde’s remarks suggest the striker may be forced to sit out the qualifiers if further scans confirm a significant problem.

The Athletic Club’s medical team will conduct additional examinations in the coming days to determine the extent of the injury.
The Black Stars are scheduled to assemble in Casablanca on Sunday, October 5, to prepare for their encounter with the Central African Republic on October 8, before returning to Accra for their home fixture against the Comoros on October 12.
Losing Williams would be a major setback for Ghana, who are targeting at least four points from the two games to strengthen their bid for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
