Ghana and AJ Auxerre defender Marvin Senaya has started his recovery journey after successfully undergoing surgery to treat the hamstring injury that prematurely ended his 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
The 26-year-old sustained the injury during the Black Stars’ Round of 32 clash against Colombia in Kansas City on July 3, forcing him off and ruling him out for the remainder of the tournament after playing a key role in Ghana’s run to the knockout stages.
Subsequent medical assessments, including detailed MRI scans carried out in the United States, confirmed significant damage to his hamstring, leaving surgery as the recommended course of treatment.
Following the diagnosis, Senaya travelled to Paris, where specialists successfully completed the procedure. He has since returned to France and rejoined his club, AJ Auxerre, where he will continue his rehabilitation under the club’s medical staff.
The recovery process is expected to keep the full-back out of action for approximately eight weeks, delaying his return to competitive football at the start of the new season.
Before the injury, Senaya had established himself as one of Ghana’s most reliable performers at the World Cup. The energetic right-back featured in every Black Stars match, impressing with his defensive discipline, relentless work rate, and attacking support down the flank.
His injury represented a significant setback for Ghana at a crucial stage of the competition, as the Black Stars eventually bowed out to Colombia.
Despite the temporary setback, both Ghana’s medical team and Auxerre remain optimistic that Senaya will make a full recovery and regain full fitness in time for the Black Stars’ 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign later this year.
While his absence will be felt by both club and country over the coming weeks, the successful operation has provided renewed confidence that the defender will soon return to action stronger than before.
