Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has openly expressed dissatisfaction with the tenure of former Black Stars head coach Otto Addo, stating that the expectations set by the Ghana Football Association were ultimately not met.

Addo, who returned to the role in March 2024, was relieved of his duties following back-to-back friendly losses against Austria and Germany during the March international break.

His dismissal also follows Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, a significant setback despite earlier securing qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Queiroz embraces Ghana mission with respect and ambition

Addressing the situation, Adams emphasized that the GFA had exercised considerable restraint and support throughout Addo’s tenure. However, he noted that the anticipated development and transformation of the team never truly materialized on the pitch.

“They [the GFA] kept the coach and carried him along. They were expecting to see some improvement and changes, but not much has been seen,” he said on the KSM Show.

With the World Cup on the horizon, the GFA has moved swiftly to appoint seasoned Portuguese manager Carlos Queiroz on a short-term deal. The experienced tactician is now tasked with steadying the Black Stars and preparing them for the global showpiece.

Queiroz is set to immediately begin evaluating the squad, building his backroom staff, and refining tactical structures. His first real test will come in an upcoming friendly against Mexico, followed by a final preparatory match against Wales on June 2.

Ghana, heading into their fifth FIFA World Cup appearance, have been placed in a challenging Group L. They will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23, and wrapping up the group stage against Croatia on June 27.

Otto Addo sacked as Ghana seek reset after friendly defeats before World Cup

The spotlight now shifts to Queiroz, as Ghana looks to reset and mount a competitive showing on football’s biggest stage.
