Black Stars defender Alidu Seidu has expressed his delight after Ghana clinched qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while reflecting on the team’s challenging journey to the global stage.

Ghana sealed their spot at next year’s tournament, set to be co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico, after edging the Comoros in their final Group I encounter. The victory capped off a hard-fought qualifying campaign that restored pride to a nation still reeling from the disappointment of missing out on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, their first absence from the continental showpiece in two decades.

Under Otto Addo’s guidance, the Black Stars rediscovered their rhythm and consistency, finishing atop Group I with 25 points from 10 games. Madagascar followed in second place with 19 points, while Mali took third on 18. Comoros and Central African Republic managed 15 and 8 points respectively, with Chad languishing at the bottom with just a single point.

For Seidu, who recently fought his way back into the squad after a lengthy injury layoff, the qualification felt deeply personal.

“The road hasn’t always been smooth, but I’ve always given my all for Ghana. Honoured to be part of this team heading to the 2026 World Cup,” the Clermont Foot defender stated proudly.

The 2026 edition will mark a historic expansion of the World Cup, with 48 teams participating and Africa earning a record nine automatic slots. For Ghana, this achievement represents their fifth appearance at football’s biggest stage, having previously qualified in 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2022, missing out only in 2018.

The Black Stars famously reached the quarterfinals in 2010 in South Africa, and expectations will once again be high as they aim to make a lasting impression in North America.

With qualification now secured, attention shifts to December 5, when the group stage draw will determine Ghana’s opponents for the 2026 showpiece.
