Former Ghana international Godwin Attram remains optimistic about the Black Stars’ chances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting the team can progress beyond the group phase despite growing doubts surrounding their recent performances.

Ghana head into the tournament in North America under pressure after enduring a difficult run in warm-up matches. The four-time African champions are winless in their last five friendly games, a streak that has sparked concern among supporters ahead of the mundial in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

However, Attram believes the arrival of Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz could provide the stability and experience needed to revive the team before the competition begins.

“The FA did well to appoint him, and we hope that whatever the country wants, he will deliver,” Attram told Graphic Sports.

The Black Stars have been handed a daunting assignment in Group L where they will face England, Croatia and Panama, but the former forward is refusing to write off Ghana’s chances.

“Why not?” he replied. “At the end of the day, it’s just football, and if we prepare ourselves very well, in tune with whatever the players must do, I’m very sure we will qualify out of the group,” he added.

Ghana will continue preparations with an international friendly against Wales on June 2 at Cardiff City Stadium as Queiroz fine-tunes his squad ahead of the finals.

The Black Stars are set for their fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup and will be chasing a return to the knockout rounds for the first time since their memorable quarter-final run in 2010. Ghana failed to advance from the group stage in both the 2014 and 2022 editions.

Queiroz has already unveiled a provisional 28-man squad, with the final roster expected to be confirmed on June 1 before the team departs for the tournament.
