The Ghana Football Association has moved swiftly to address growing concerns around the Ghana national football team, holding an urgent high-level meeting with the team’s technical bench following their crushing defeat to Austria national football team.

The emergency discussions, which took place over the weekend, were prompted by Ghana’s alarming 5-1 collapse in Vienna, a result that has cast serious doubt over the squad’s sharpness and tactical readiness ahead of major international assignments.

Played at the iconic Ernst Happel Stadium, the friendly quickly turned into a one-sided affair. Austria seized control early, with Marcel Sabitzer calmly slotting home a 12th-minute penalty after a handball by Jonas Adjetey. Ghana struggled to regain composure as the hosts tightened their grip. Second-half strikes from Michael Gregoritsch and Stefan Posch stretched the deficit, exposing defensive frailties and a lack of cohesion in the Black Stars setup.

Although Jordan Ayew offered a glimmer of resistance with a 77th-minute consolation, Austria responded ruthlessly. Substitute Carney Chukwuemeka added a fourth, before Nicolas Seiwald capped off the demolition deep into stoppage time.

In response, the GFA leadership, alongside its Management Committee, summoned head coach Otto Addo and his backroom staff, demanding immediate improvement in both performance and results. Sources close to the situation indicate that patience is wearing thin, with the coach’s future potentially hanging in the balance should the team fail to show a convincing turnaround.

Focus now shifts to a high-stakes test against Germany national football team in Stuttgart, where Ghana will be under pressure to restore pride and demonstrate tangible progress.

These friendlies form part of Ghana’s broader build-up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to be staged across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Looking ahead, the Black Stars are scheduled for further preparatory fixtures against Mexico national football team and Wales national football team in the coming months. They will then enter the World Cup campaign in Group L, where daunting clashes await against Panama, England, and Croatia.
