Addo sounds alarm as defensive frailties haunt Ghana in Austria humbling

Otto Addo has openly admitted that Ghana’s defensive shortcomings remain a major concern after the Black Stars were dismantled 5-1 by Austria in a bruising international friendly.

The defeat, which quickly spiralled out of control after an evenly contested opening phase, exposed a backline that struggled both in structure and composure. While the scoreline itself was stark, Addo suggested the deeper issue lies in how his side reacts when momentum shifts against them.

“Defensively, we have problems. We have to be stable, especially psychologically. The third goal we still have to keep our heads up, keep the intensity,” Addo said after the game.

Austria run riot as Ghana collapse in Vienna friendly

Ghana’s early vulnerability set the tone, with two soft goals conceded before the team completely lost its defensive shape. As Austria pressed their advantage, the Black Stars appeared increasingly disjointed, allowing further goals to follow with minimal resistance.

For Addo, the unraveling was not just tactical, it was mental:

“I can understand that the players were disappointed. But these are the situations where we still need to step up. We have to overcome this. Let’s talk about the defence.”

The coach was particularly critical of how avoidable the goals were, noting that concentration levels dipped alarmingly once the match began to slip beyond reach.

“The first two goals were easy. In goals 3, 4 and 5, there was a lot of defensive issues. We have to work on that psychologically,” he admitted.

His assessment underscores a worrying pattern: a team capable of competing in spells, but unable to sustain discipline and focus when tested. It is a flaw that, if left unresolved, could undermine Ghana’s ambitions on bigger stages.

Despite the setback, Addo is already turning attention to the next challenge, a high-profile encounter against Germany in Stuttgart.
