Talks have been opened between Genoa and Ghanaian forward Caleb Ekuban over a contract extension, with the Italian side keen to lock down one of their most dependable senior figures well before his current deal expires in June 2026, according to Footy-Africa.

Genoa’s recruitment team and executives have identified Ekuban as part of the spine they want to retain as the club continues to steady itself in Serie A. Since arriving from Trabzonspor in 2021, the 31-year-old has carved out a reputation as a reliable utility forward, a player managers trust to execute tactical instructions, press relentlessly and offer experience to a dressing room in transition.

While his raw output rarely steals headlines, his cumulative contribution over five league campaigns tells a broader story. More than a century of appearances, double-digit goals, timely assists and an ability to cover multiple attacking roles have made him a constant in Genoa’s matchday plans.

Coaches have repeatedly leaned on his intensity and discipline to balance more attack-minded profiles around him.

Ekuban’s influence was especially felt during the club’s time in the second tier in 2022/23. As Genoa pushed for an immediate return to the top flight, his consistency and big-game temperament were key to navigating the pressure of promotion.

That season did more than restore Genoa’s Serie A status, it cemented Ekuban’s standing as a trusted senior pro within the squad.

People close to the club say the early move to open renewal talks is driven by more than just minutes on the pitch. Genoa’s hierarchy rate his professionalism, availability and leadership qualities, viewing him as the type of stabilising presence needed as the club looks to consolidate rather than lurch from rebuild to rebuild.

From the player’s side, there is a clear willingness to keep the story going in Liguria. Ekuban has settled into life in Italy and feels valued by the project being outlined to him.

Those close to the negotiations suggest he is encouraged by the club’s intent to commit early, and both sides are hopeful a compromise can be reached.

That said, the door remains open to alternatives if an agreement proves elusive. Turkey remains a familiar and attractive option for the forward, given the successful chapter he enjoyed at Trabzonspor, where he lifted domestic honours and enhanced his profile in European competition.

For now, momentum points towards continuity rather than change, a quiet but deliberate effort by Genoa to keep a trusted cog in place as they shape the next phase of their Serie A journey.
