Ghana’s number one goalkeeper, Benjamin Asare, has opened up about the player who shaped his goalkeeping philosophy, none other than Germany’s iconic shot-stopper Manuel Neuer.
The Hearts of Oak star has risen to prominence in spectacular fashion, becoming a cornerstone for both club and country. His flawless start to the 2025 Ghana Premier League season, without a single goal conceded, and his near-perfect record in the World Cup qualifiers have cemented his reputation as the nation’s safest pair of hands.

Speaking after Ghana’s crucial win over the Comoros, Asare reflected on where his inspiration began.
“Neuer has always been the goalkeeper that I look up to right from my early days when I was developing my craft,” he revealed to the media, after guiding Ghana to the World Cup.
The Hearts of Oak custodian praised Neuer’s technical brilliance and leadership qualities, attributes he has consciously tried to mirror in his own game.
“The way he kicks, communicates and generally how he conducts himself within the box is what I wanted to emulate,” Asare added.

Once considered a late bloomer, Asare’s rise has been nothing short of meteoric. His commanding presence between the sticks and calm demeanour have transformed him into Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper, and with the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, he now stands on the verge of making his debut on football’s biggest stage.
