Austria run riot as Ghana collapse in Vienna friendly

Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup suffered a sobering setback on Friday night, as the Black Stars were comprehensively dismantled 5-1 by Austria at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion in Vienna.

What was intended as a crucial tune-up fixture instead exposed glaring weaknesses, with Otto Addo’s side outplayed for vast stretches by a sharper, more cohesive Austrian team.

The hosts seized control midway through the opening half when Marcel Sabitzer calmly dispatched a penalty following a lapse in Ghana’s defence. From that point, Austria dictated the rhythm of the contest, leaving Ghana chasing shadows and struggling to impose themselves.

Any hopes of a reset after the interval quickly evaporated. Austria emerged with renewed intensity and struck twice in quick succession, as Michael Gregoritsch and Stefan Posch capitalised on Ghana’s disorganisation to stretch the advantage to three goals. The scoreline at that stage merely reflected Austria’s dominance rather than flattered it.

Ghana did manage a brief moment of encouragement late on, when captain Jordan Ayew applied a composed finish in the 77th minute to pull one back. However, the goal proved little more than a consolation.

Austria swiftly reasserted their authority, with Carney Chukwuemeka and Nicolas Seiwald adding late goals to complete a commanding performance and underline the gulf between the two sides on the night.

For Otto Addo, the heavy defeat will raise serious questions as he continues to fine-tune his squad ahead of the World Cup, where Ghana are set to face Panama, Croatia and England in a challenging group.

Focus now shifts to the upcoming friendly against Germany, where a response will be expected if the Black Stars are to restore confidence and build any meaningful momentum before the global showpiece.
