Asante Kotoko could be on the verge of losing their talismanic captain, Samba O’Neil, as contract negotiations continue to hit a stalemate. The Congolese defender’s current deal is set to expire at the close of the season, and reports suggest he has attracted interest from clubs across Libya, South Africa, and Tanzania.
Despite Kotoko’s persistent attempts to secure his future, O’Neil appears hesitant to commit to a new deal. Speaking to Luv FM, the club’s Communications Director, Sarfo Duku, confirmed that talks have dragged on for months.
“We sent a new proposal to Samba and his team, and we await their response,” Duku said. “Looking at how long it has taken, because we started this conversation almost a year ago, it appears to us that it is becoming difficult for the player to renew his contract.
But we keep pressing with the hope that he will have a change of mind because he feels that he would want to continue somewhere.”

O’Neil has been a cornerstone of Kotoko’s defence this season, featuring in 19 matches and netting three goals. His influence has been pivotal in guiding the Porcupine Warriors to multiple triumphs, contributing to four titles under head coach Karim Zito.
Zito has often lauded O’Neil’s abilities, calling the centre-back “exceptional,” and has even expressed hopes of seeing him switch nationality, highlighting the player’s immense value to the club.
As the end of the season approaches, Kotoko fans will be left anxiously waiting to see if their captain will remain a part of the team or seek pastures new.
