Appiah shuts down Ghana return talk amid coaching vacancy

Kwesi Appiah has categorically brushed aside growing rumors suggesting he is in line for a sensational return to the Ghana national football team setup, insisting the reports are entirely unfounded.

The current Sudan national football team head coach was heavily linked with the vacant Black Stars job earlier this week, with claims emerging from Ghana that he was scheduled to arrive on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, for high-level talks. According to the speculation, the meeting was to involve none other than John Dramani Mahama, as authorities moved swiftly to find a successor.

But Appiah has moved quickly to set the record straight, distancing himself from the narrative.

“It’s not true. I am in Saudi Arabia to monitor some Sudanese players,” he told GHANASoccernet.com.

The swirl of rumors comes in the immediate aftermath of Ghana Football Association parting company with Otto Addo, a decision that has intensified the search for new leadership just weeks before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana begin coaching hunt as Appiah emerges in shock interim frame

Addo’s exit followed a disappointing international window in which Ghana suffered back-to-back friendly defeats against Austria and Germany, results that appear to have forced the federation’s hand at a critical moment.

Appiah’s name inevitably resurfaced in the conversation given his history with the Black Stars. He previously led Ghana at the 2014 FIFA World Cup during his initial spell in charge. Although relieved of his duties in 2015, he was handed a second opportunity two years later.

That second tenure, however, ended in disappointment after a disastrous campaign at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, which ultimately sealed his departure.

Despite his past ties and experience, Appiah’s latest comments make it clear that, for now, any talk of a reunion with Ghana remains firmly in the realm of speculation.
