Ghanaian football legend Andre Ayew has applauded Black Satellites youngster Amer Michael Mahama following the teenager’s leap to European football with French Ligue 2 outfit USL Dunkerque.
Ayew, a former Black Stars skipper, took to Instagram to deliver his message of support, describing Mahama’s move as the start of “a long and promising journey,” and urging him to keep striving for greatness.
Mahama, 19, put pen to paper on a two-year deal with Dunkerque earlier this week, leaving behind Ghanaian lower-division side Nice Ibrahim, a club run by Ibrahim Mahama, brother of former president John Mahama.
An attacking midfielder blessed with vision and creativity, the youngster has been tipped as one of the brightest talents emerging from Ghana’s U20 ranks. European scouts had circled for months, but Dunkerque won the race, with Senegalese icon and ex-Chelsea striker Demba Ba’s involvement in the club believed to have played a part in sealing the deal.
Mahama will initially link up with Dunkerque’s development side as he adapts to French football, but the long-term plan is to push him into the senior team. Club insiders see him as a player who could inject flair and imagination into their attack.
Dunkerque, currently battling for consistency after a 2-2 draw in their most recent Ligue 2 outing, will be hoping Mahama quickly finds his feet and eventually blossoms into a first-team regular.
