Ghana’s youth national team, the Black Starlets, will have to navigate one of the most demanding paths at the upcoming 2026 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations after being placed in a highly competitive Group D.
The draw, organized by the Confederation of African Football in Cairo, has paired Ghana with three formidable opponents, Senegal, South Africa, and Algeria, for the tournament scheduled to run in Morocco from May 13 to June 2.
The grouping has quickly earned the tag of a ‘Group of Death,’ and for good reason. Each of Ghana’s opponents brings a distinct threat to the table. Senegal, in particular, carries a strong reputation at youth level, while both South Africa and Algeria are known for their structured approach and technical sharpness.

For the Black Starlets, this marks a long-awaited return to the continental stage, having last featured in the competition back in 2017. Their reappearance adds an extra layer of anticipation, but also raises the stakes as they aim to reassert themselves among Africa’s elite youth sides.
Progression from the group will be anything but straightforward. Only the top two teams will secure automatic qualification to the knockout phase and book their tickets to the FIFA U-17 World Cup. Teams finishing third will still have a lifeline, entering playoffs to contest the remaining qualification spots.
Despite the daunting challenge ahead, Ghana’s mission is clear, overcome a difficult group phase and take a decisive step toward returning to the global stage.
