Carlos Queiroz is poised to continue as Ghana head coach after winning the backing of both the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, with the two bodies agreeing to extend his stay beyond his initial short-term appointment.
Footy-Ghana understands that discussions held after the Black Stars’ 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign ended with a unanimous decision to keep the Portuguese tactician at the helm, as officials look to build on the foundations laid during his brief spell in charge.
The experienced coach is now expected to sign a two-year contract that will place the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations at the heart of his mission.
Ending Ghana’s long-standing continental drought has emerged as the federation’s biggest target, with the Black Stars still chasing a first AFCON title since their triumph in 1982.
Laryea Kingston open to Ghana coaching role, urges GFA to embrace long-term rebuild
Queiroz was drafted in on a four-month deal shortly before the World Cup and immediately steadied the national team, guiding Ghana out of a difficult group before their journey ended in the Round of 32.
Although the campaign stopped short of the latter stages, decision-makers were encouraged by the team’s improved tactical discipline, defensive organisation and overall structure under the veteran manager.
Those qualities ultimately convinced both the GFA and the Sports Ministry that continuity offered the best path forward instead of embarking on yet another coaching change.
The former Portugal, Iran, Egypt, Colombia, Qatar and South Africa boss is now expected to oversee Ghana’s preparations for the upcoming AFCON qualifiers while laying the groundwork for a squad capable of challenging for continental honours.
Officials believe his wealth of experience on the international stage, coupled with his proven ability to manage elite national teams, gives Ghana its strongest opportunity to mount a serious assault on the 2027 AFCON crown.
