Ghana’s painful exit from the 2010 FIFA World Cup continues to cast a long shadow, even at the highest levels of leadership.
President John Dramani Mahama has openly acknowledged that the memory of that heartbreaking night in South Africa still stirs strong emotions, particularly toward Luis Suárez.

Speaking during the Ghana World Cup fundraising event held on Friday, March 20, 2026, at the prestigious Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City, Mahama reflected on the dramatic encounter between Ghana and Uruguay, describing it as a moment etched permanently in the nation’s history.
“I still remember 2010 vividly, the energy that was in the air. The nation stands still, united in hope,” he said.
“As we came within a whisper of gaining world glory. I still don’t like Suarez since that incident, and I have never wished him well for what he did,” Mahama added.
The incident he referred to remains one of football’s most debated flashpoints. In the final seconds of extra time, Suárez intentionally blocked a goal-bound header from Dominic Adiyiah with his hand on the goal line, an act that denied Ghana a near-certain place in the semi-finals.
Although the Uruguayan forward was immediately dismissed, the damage lingered. Ghana were handed a lifeline through a penalty, but Asamoah Gyan was unable to convert. The match eventually slipped away in a tense penalty shootout, ending what had been a historic run for the Black Stars.
Years on, that moment still resonates deeply across Ghana, symbolizing both the nation’s closest brush with World Cup glory and one of its most agonizing football memories.
Looking ahead, Ghana is set to return to the global stage for their fifth World Cup appearance later this year. Drawn into a challenging Group L, the Black Stars will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing heavyweights England on June 23. Their group stage journey will conclude with a clash against Croatia on June 27, as they aim to write a new chapter, one that could finally eclipse the heartbreak of 2010.
