Ghana forward Antoine Semenyo has lifted the lid on the decisive intervention by AFC Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola that convinced him to remain on the South Coast despite heavy interest from some of England’s biggest clubs.
The 25-year-old attacker had been courted by multiple Premier League giants, with both Liverpool and Manchester United monitoring him closely throughout the summer window. For weeks, speculation intensified around a possible big-money move away from the Vitality Stadium.
But instead of pursuing a transfer, Semenyo stunned many by committing his long-term future to the Cherries, signing a fresh contract that ties him to the club until 2030.
Semenyo: ‘I’m glad I stayed – I’m loving every minute at Bournemouth’
The in-form Black Stars striker has now revealed that Iraola’s influence, particularly the team’s impressive surge at the end of last season, played a defining role in his decision to stay put.
“There was a lot of interest and back-and-fourth with the club [over a potential transfer],” Semenyo told Sky Sports. “But I knew in my head that the manager’s got something up his sleeve this year. How we finished off the season last year was so good and we could continue, especially with the players we’ve bought in as well.”
Semenyo enjoyed a breakout campaign last season, scoring 11 Premier League goals as Bournemouth secured their highest-ever top-flight finish. He has carried that momentum into the new term, striking six times in just 10 matches to remain one of Iraola’s most influential performers.
The former Bristol City forward says the manager’s philosophy and relentless approach transformed the dressing room and gave him the confidence to turn his back on high-profile suitors.
“He’s unbelievable [Iraola] honestly,” he said. “As everyone embedded into what his playing style was, it’s just been unbelievable. It’s just relentless, and I think everyone’s into it.”

Semenyo’s commitment serves as a major boost for Bournemouth as they look to build on last season’s progress under Iraola, with the Ghanaian shaping up to be a central figure in the club’s long-term project.
