Asante Kotoko have moved swiftly to steady the ship following a sudden change in their technical leadership, appointing Prince Yaw Owusu as interim head coach after Abdul Karim Zito stepped down from his role.
The Kumasi-based giants confirmed the development late on Monday night, naming Owusu to temporarily take charge of the team, with Mohammed Hamza Obeng appointed as his assistant. The duo will oversee the Porcupine Warriors until the club completes the process of recruiting a permanent head coach.
“Coach Prince Yaw Owusu is to temporarily take charge of the technical team assisted by Mohammed Hamza Obeng,” the Kumasi-based club announced in a post on X.
The announcement came only hours after Kotoko officially confirmed the departure of Abdul Karim Zito, bringing an end to his stint at the club. Management acknowledged his decision to step aside and expressed gratitude for his contribution during his time in charge.
“Abdul Karim Zito Kabutey has resigned from his role as the head coach of Asante Kotoko Sporting Club with immediate effect. Management has accepted the resignation, expressed its appreciation to the coach for his services and wished him the best for the future,” the club said.

With little time to settle into their new roles, Owusu and Obeng are set to be thrown straight into the deep end. Their first major task will be to ready Kotoko for the highly anticipated Super Clash against arch-rivals Hearts of Oak in the Ghana Premier League next weekend, a fixture that could shape early momentum under the new technical setup.
The interim appointment signals Kotoko’s intent to maintain stability in the short term while the club hierarchy works behind the scenes to identify a long-term successor to steer the team through the rest of the season.
