Ghana head coach Otto Addo has made a personal trip to Italy to check on Tariq Lamptey, after the defender’s season was thrown into disarray by a devastating injury.

Lamptey, who only joined Fiorentina this summer in search of a new chapter after his turbulent years in England, tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) shortly after the last international break. The injury, which required immediate surgery, has ruled him out for an extended period, sidelining him from both club football and the Black Stars’ decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

For Fiorentina, it is a cruel blow to a player they had hoped would solidify their backline. For Ghana, it robs Addo of one of his most dynamic full-backs at the most crucial point of the qualifiers. Medical reports indicate Lamptey will need at least six months of recovery, casting doubt on whether he will be fit in time to make the World Cup itself, should the Black Stars book their place.

In the midst of that uncertainty, Addo’s visit is a powerful gesture. The coach’s decision to sit with Lamptey in Florence underscores his emphasis on human connection as much as tactical preparation.

Rather than letting the player slip into isolation during his rehabilitation, Addo has chosen to remind him that he remains an integral part of Ghana’s project.

The Black Stars’ road to the 2026 World Cup remains in their hands. With just two fixtures left against the Central African Republic and Comoros, Ghana needs four points to confirm their ticket to the finals.

Yet amid the pressure, Addo’s trip signals that caring for players extends far beyond the ninety minutes on the pitch.
