Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has made it clear that Kobbie Mainoo will not be allowed to leave Old Trafford this summer, despite the youngster’s growing frustrations.
The 19-year-old midfielder, who has endured a rocky opening to the campaign, reportedly asked to quit the club after featuring in United’s shock midweek EFL Cup defeat to Grimsby Town. His request sparked interest from Napoli and several other European suitors eager to prise him away.
But Amorim, speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s clash with Burnley, confirmed that he personally intervened to block any move.
“I want Kobbie to stay. We need Kobbie, but he needs to fight for his place, and my position is not going to change,” OneFootball qoutes the Portuguese manager.
Mainoo’s name has already been in the headlines several times this year—Chelsea tried to secure his signature in January, only for talks to collapse at the final stages. Despite being just a teenager, he has already clocked up 73 first-team appearances for United, scoring seven goals and supplying three assists, numbers that underline his status as one of the brightest products of the club’s academy.
The midfielder’s long-term future is also protected. His contract ties him to the Red Devils until June 2027, with an extra year option built in, while his market value has soared to around €50 million, a reflection of both his potential and his performances at the highest level.
