Ghana’s Sports and Recreation Minister, Kofi Adams, has suggested that a return to the national team for veteran forward Andre Ayew ahead of the next FIFA World Cup should not be ruled out.
In an interview with Adom FM, Adams indicated that Ayew remains very much in the conversation for a place in the Ghana national football team squad as long as he continues to feature actively at club level.
“I think he is picking up also. Once he has not retired and still playing actively, I won’t be surprised to see him in the Black Stars squad for the World Cup,” Adams told Adom FM.
Despite acknowledging the veteran’s ongoing relevance, the minister emphasized that squad selection ultimately falls under the authority of the team’s technical leadership.
“However, it is the responsibility of the coach to decide whether to invite him or not,” he added.
Andre Ayew celebrates NAC Breda’s resurgence after consecutive victories
Ayew has long been one of Ghana’s most influential football figures. The experienced attacker, who previously captained the Black Stars, has amassed a record number of appearances for the national side and represented the country in multiple editions of the Africa Cup of Nations as well as the FIFA World Cup.
Over the years, his presence in the squad has often been valued not only for his contributions on the pitch but also for his leadership during periods of transition within the national team setup.
However, the 36-year-old has recently faced growing competition from a new generation of attacking players, sparking ongoing debate among supporters and analysts about whether he still fits into Ghana’s long-term plans.
Even so, Ayew’s club form has revived the conversation. Since joining NAC Breda during the winter transfer window, the seasoned forward has featured eight times in the Eredivisie, delivering performances that have reminded many of his enduring quality.
With Ghana continuing its push to qualify and assemble a competitive squad for the next FIFA World Cup, the prospect of Ayew’s inclusion remains a subject likely to generate discussion in the months ahead.
