Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston has thrown his weight behind Black Stars head coach Otto Addo, expressing confidence in his ability to steer the national team toward a strong showing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Addo’s tenure has been a study in sharp contrasts. While Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations sparked intense criticism and loud calls for his removal, the 50-year-old coach responded emphatically on the World Cup front. He successfully guided the Black Stars to qualification for the expanded 2026 tournament, finishing top of their qualifying group with an impressive 25 points from 10 matches.

Kingston believes that achievement should not be overlooked, insisting Addo has grown into the role and now possesses the experience required to succeed at the highest level. However, the former Black Starlets coach stressed that consistency remains the key challenge for the technical team.

“Otto Addo has what it takes to lead every team because of the experience he has now,” Kingston told SuperSport Blitz.

“He has been at FC Nordsjaelland before going to Borussia Dortmund, a side that is just like Nordsjaelland, so I believe that in the long term, he will be a success for the national team, but there should be consistency,” he added.

Ghana’s World Cup journey will begin on June 17 against Panama in Toronto. The Black Stars will then take on England in a high-profile clash on June 23 in Boston, before closing their group-stage campaign against Croatia on June 27 in Philadelphia.

Having suffered disappointing early exits at the 2014 and 2022 World Cups, Ghana will be eager to make a deeper run this time around, especially with the opportunities presented by the tournament’s expanded format.

Ahead of the competition, Otto Addo is expected to unveil his final World Cup squad on June 1 as preparations intensify for the global showpiece to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
