Union Berlin left-back Derrick Köhn has lifted the lid on the personal assurance he gave to Ghana head coach Otto Addo, pledging his full commitment to the Black Stars whenever the national team comes calling.
The German-born defender, who is eligible to represent Ghana, earned his maiden senior call-up in August for the Black Stars’ 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying fixtures against Chad and Mali. However, administrative hurdles delayed his long-awaited debut as he awaited FIFA clearance.
Köhn’s international breakthrough eventually came at the Kirin Challenge Cup, where he made his first appearance for Ghana against Japan. Although the Black Stars suffered defeat in that encounter, the 26-year-old left-back impressed with a composed and disciplined display, signaling his readiness for international football.
In an interview with Sporty FM, Köhn revealed that Ghana’s pursuit of his services dates back several years, though early discussions failed to bear fruit. At the time, his focus shifted entirely to club football as communication with the Ghana Football Association fizzled out.
A turning point came in 2024, when talks resumed, this time through a familiar face. Otto Addo, who had previously worked with Köhn during his time as Hamburg’s U-19 coach, reconnected with the defender and reignited the possibility of international football with Ghana.
“I was not really connected to Ghana when I was young, so I was excited to play for Germany at the U19 level. Ghana made the first contact while I was playing in the Netherlands in 2020,” he said.
“I was talking to them [GFA], but I don’t know, the conversation broke down, so I focused on my club. With Otto Addo, the conversation started around 2024. I know Otto Addo because when I was at Hamburg, he was our U19 coach. So I told him I was ready to play for Ghana if he needed me,” Kohn added.
Köhn’s decision appears to be paying off both internationally and at club level. He has made a strong impression at Union Berlin this season, featuring in 15 matches so far in the 2025/26 campaign and cementing his role as a regular starter.
With his commitment now clear and his performances on the rise, Köhn looks poised to become an increasingly important option for Otto Addo as Ghana continues its journey toward the 2026 World Cup.
