Ghanaian stars deliver as Ati-Zigi, Paintsil and Owusu headline weekend action

Ghanaian footballers across Europe, North America and Asia produced another exciting weekend of performances, with several players finding the net, lifting silverware and delivering standout displays for their clubs.

In the United States, attacking trio Joseph Paintsil, Maxwell Woledzi and Prince Owusu stole the spotlight in Major League Soccer with decisive contributions for their respective sides.

Joseph Paintsil continued his impressive form for LA Galaxy by getting on the scoresheet in a 1-1 stalemate against Houston Dynamo. Nashville SC defender Maxwell Woledzi also found the back of the net in his club’s 2-1 triumph over New York City FC.

However, the biggest headline in MLS belonged to Prince Owusu, who produced a sensational hat-trick for CF Montreal in an electrifying 4-4 draw against DC United.

In Slovenia, Benjamin Tetteh delivered a superb cameo performance after coming off the bench to score and provide an assist in Maribor’s commanding 3-0 victory over Aluminij.

There was silverware in Russia for Alexander Djiku, who played an important role as Spartak Moscow defeated Krasnodar 2-1 to clinch the Russian Cup title.

Spain

In La Liga, Inaki Williams registered an assist for Athletic Bilbao in their narrow 2-1 loss to Real Madrid.

Defender Abdul Mumin made a welcome return from injury and featured in Rayo Vallecano’s 2-1 victory over Alaves.

In Spain’s Segunda Division, Samuel Obeng came off the bench to play 16 minutes for Albacete during their 3-1 win over Real Sociedad B.

Italy

Kamaldeen Sulemana lasted 81 minutes for Atalanta in their 1-1 draw against Fiorentina in Serie A.

Midfielder Ibrahim Sulemana also featured for Cagliari, making a late appearance in their 2-1 victory over AC Milan.

Belgium

Henry Oware made a substitute appearance for Lommel SK in their draw against Dender.

Mohammed Fuseini featured for Royale Union SG during their emphatic 5-1 demolition of Anderlecht.

China

Veteran winger Frank Acheampong impressed again after playing 86 minutes in Dalian Yingbo’s 2-0 victory over Chengdu Rongcheng.

Yaw Yeboah completed the full match for Qingdao Hainiu in a narrow 1-0 defeat to Chongqing Tonglianglong.

Abdul Aziz Yakubu also featured for Qingdao West Coast as they edged Yunnan Yukun 3-2.

Czech Republic

Prince Adu played 46 minutes for Viktoria Plzen in their difficult 3-0 defeat against Slavia Prague.

Finland

Prosper Ahiabu completed the entire match for Inter Turku in their 2-1 win over TPS.

Yeboah Amankwah also lasted 90 minutes for Mariehamn, though his side fell 3-0 to Jaro.

The Ghanaian pair of Clinton Antwi and Bob Armah both played key roles in KuPS’ 2-1 success against Lahti.

Salim Yussif featured for 73 minutes in SJK’s 1-0 loss to AC Oulu.

Russia

Alexander Djiku celebrated cup success with Spartak Moscow after helping the club secure a 2-1 win over Krasnodar in the Russian Cup final.

Serbia

Sadick Abubakar endured a difficult outing as Radnik Surdulica suffered a heavy 5-0 defeat to Partizan.

Skima Togbe played 45 minutes for Novi Pazar in their 3-0 loss against Vojvodina.

Sumaila Wasiu featured for 61 minutes for Zeleznicar Pancevo in their draw with Cukaricki.

Daniel Akrofi came off the bench to play 17 minutes for IMT Novi Beograd in a 1-1 draw against TSC.

Benjamin Acquah saw action in Javor’s entertaining 2-2 draw with Radnicki 1923.

Issah Abass impressed in Radnicki Nis’ 2-1 victory over Spartak Subotica after playing 77 minutes, while Kwaku Bonsu Osei featured for 73 minutes for Spartak Subotica.

Slovenia

Benjamin Tetteh emerged as one of the standout Ghanaian performers in Europe after scoring and assisting in Maribor’s dominant 3-0 win over Aluminij.

Sweden

Gideon Yiriyon played 46 minutes for Degerfors in their 2-1 defeat against Kalmar.

Switzerland

Goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi produced a heroic display for St. Gallen as they defeated Lausanne Ouchy 3-0 to win the Swiss Cup.

The Ghana international was introduced under difficult circumstances after goalkeeper Lukas Watkowiak was sent off in the closing stages of the first half, but Ati-Zigi rose to the occasion with a commanding performance as St. Gallen held firm despite being reduced to 10 men.

United States

Prince Owusu’s hat-trick for CF Montreal headlined another productive weekend for Ghanaian players in Major League Soccer.

Morrison Agyemang completed 90 minutes for Charlotte FC in their slim 1-0 victory over New England Revolution.

Maxwell Woledzi scored in Nashville SC’s 2-1 success against New York City FC.

Ronald Donkor featured for New York Red Bulls as they defeated Sporting Kansas City 2-1.

Manu Duah completed the full match for San Diego FC in their 4-2 loss to Vancouver Whitecaps.

Joseph Paintsil also continued his fine form with a goal for LA Galaxy in their draw against Houston Dynamo.
