Ghana FA to celebrate Gyan with testimonial match honouring legendary career

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has confirmed plans to stage a testimonial match in tribute to one of the nation’s most iconic footballers, Asamoah Gyan, the FA has said on their website.

Apparently, the event will honour the former Black Stars captain’s extraordinary contributions to Ghanaian football and his enduring legacy on the international stage.

In collaboration with Gyan himself, the GFA will announce further details in the coming weeks. The testimonial is poised to be a spectacular celebration of a player whose name is forever entwined with the history of Ghana’s national team.

Known affectionately as “Baby Jet,” Gyan holds the distinction of being Ghana’s all-time leading scorer, finding the net 51 times in 109 appearances for the Black Stars. His exploits on the world stage are equally historic, as he stands as Africa’s highest scorer in FIFA World Cup history, netting six goals across the 2006, 2010, and 2014 tournaments in Germany, South Africa, and Brazil, respectively.

Gyan’s club career mirrored his international success, spanning Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Turkey. He began his journey at Liberty Professionals in Ghana before moving to Udinese in Italy, which included a loan spell at Modena, and later joined Rennes in France. A move to England saw him feature for Sunderland in the Premier League, where his talent caught global attention.

The striker’s fame extended beyond Europe, as he became a star in Asia and the Middle East. Gyan dazzled fans with Al Ain and Al Ahli in the UAE, then showcased his skills with Shanghai SIPG in China and Turkey’s Kayserispor, before finally returning home to conclude his professional career with Legon Cities FC.
