Ghana will have to do without defensive linchpin Alexander Djiku when they face Chad in Thursday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifier in N’Djamena.

The Ghana Football Association confirmed that the Strasbourg-born centre-back is currently in Moscow completing a transfer deal and will only join up with his teammates on Friday. His absence robs the Black Stars of one of their most consistent performers at a time when stability at the back is crucial.

According to Footy-Africa‘s report, the 31-year-old centre-back is set to move to Russian powerhouse Spartak Moscow on a permanent deal.

Despite the setback, Djiku is expected to be fit and ready for Ghana’s next fixture — a blockbuster clash with Mali at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday, September 8. His return could be pivotal as head coach Chris Hughton’s side look to maintain their stranglehold at the top of Group I.

Djiku set for a move to Russia, Spartak Moscow make strong push

The Black Stars touched down in N’Djamena in the early hours of Wednesday and will stage a full training session later in the day at the Stade Olympique Maréchal Idriss Déby Itno. With 15 points from six matches, Ghana are firmly on track for a record-extending fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup.

Thursday’s contest offers the perfect opportunity to tighten their grip on qualification, but they’ll have to do so without one of their most trusted defensive generals.
