Asante Kotoko’s CAF Confederation Cup ambitions hang in the balance after suffering a narrow but damaging 1–0 loss to Moroccan giants Wydad AC at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.

The Porcupine Warriors started brightly, pressing high and unsettling their visitors in the opening stages. They carved out a golden opportunity inside ten minutes but failed to convert, a miss that would come back to haunt them as the match wore on.

Wydad gradually settled into their rhythm, dictating play with sharp passing and patient build-up. Kotoko’s goalkeeper, Mohammed Camara, was called into action several times in the first half, pulling off impressive stops to keep the scoreline level heading into the break.

However, the visitors struck just two minutes after the restart. A Kotoko lapse in defending from a corner allowed an unmarked Wydad attacker to pounce from close range, giving the North Africans a vital away goal.

Kotoko’s situation worsened almost immediately when Camara was shown a straight red card for handling the ball outside his box while racing to deny another Wydad breakaway. With ten men on the pitch and a goal down, the hosts were forced to retreat, relying on sheer determination to stay in the game.

Despite their resilience, Kotoko found it difficult to muster any serious response, struggling to retain possession or threaten in the final third as Wydad comfortably managed the closing stages.

The defeat leaves the Ghanaian side facing a daunting second leg in Casablanca, where they must overturn the deficit against one of Africa’s most formidable home sides to keep their Confederation Cup dreams alive.
