Bologna have summoned Ghanaian midfielder Ibrahim Sulemana back to Italy for medical checks after the youngster picked up a knee injury while on international duty, Footy-Africa has learned.

The 22-year-old was forced out of Ghana’s 1-1 stalemate with Chad on Thursday and has been ruled out of Monday night’s high-stakes World Cup qualifier against Mali in Accra. His early return means Bologna’s medical team will oversee his recovery in hopes of getting him fit for their upcoming Serie A clash with AC Milan.

Sulemana, who joined Bologna on loan just before the international window opened, is still awaiting his competitive debut for the Rossoblù. His first appearance for the club is now on hold, with Bologna eager to ensure his injury setback doesn’t derail his progress.

The Italian side holds an option to secure Sulemana’s services permanently for €10 million at the end of the campaign, part of a loan deal struck with Atalanta. The midfielder only joined the Bergamo outfit in June 2024 from Cagliari for a fee in the region of €7.5 million and has three years left on that contract.

A dynamic presence in midfield, Sulemana ended last season with promising performances, scoring twice and cementing his reputation as one of Ghana’s emerging talents. His brief spell at Bologna has yet to kick off, but both club and country are hopeful his current injury will prove minor.
