Ghana international Daniel-Kofi Kyereh has shed light on a pivotal moment that helped him endure one of the most challenging periods of his career, revealing how a surprise call from former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah provided much-needed strength during his long recovery.
Kyereh’s journey with the national team began on a high when he earned his maiden call-up in 2021, but that upward trajectory was abruptly halted a year later.
A severe anterior cruciate ligament injury sidelined him for an extended spell, forcing the attacking midfielder into a gruelling rehabilitation process that kept him away from competitive football for close to three years.
Now 28, Kyereh has taken significant steps toward reclaiming his place on the pitch. He recently returned to action with SC Freiburg II, gradually rebuilding his sharpness and confidence as he edges closer to full fitness.

Reflecting on the mental toll of his injury layoff in an interview with JoySports, Kyereh pointed to Appiah’s outreach as a defining moment in his recovery. The former Ghana captain, who experienced similar physical setbacks during his own playing days, offered guidance rooted in personal understanding, something Kyereh says resonated deeply.
“During my time in rehab, he called me. I was so surprised and honoured to receive his call. He’s such a nice guy. He gave me some really encouraging words and motivated me to come back stronger,” Kyereh said.
With his comeback now underway, Kyereh has set his sights firmly on the future. If his progress continues on an upward curve, he could yet force his way back into Ghana’s plans ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking what would be a remarkable return after years of adversity.
