Ghana have been handed a fresh injury concern ahead of their blockbuster FIFA World Cup Group L encounter against England, with goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi set to undergo further medical assessment after being forced off during the Black Stars’ opening victory over Panama.
The experienced shot-stopper suffered the setback in the first half of Ghana’s dramatic 1-0 triumph in Toronto after bravely charging off his line to thwart a dangerous Panamanian attack. In the process, Ati-Zigi collided heavily with an opposing player and required lengthy treatment on the pitch before attempting to continue.
Despite showing tremendous determination to play through the pain, the 29-year-old was unable to see out the contest and was replaced by Benjamin Asare at the interval. The Ghana Football Association has yet to issue an official update on the goalkeeper’s condition, but concerns remain that the injury could jeopardize his involvement in Tuesday’s high-profile meeting with England in Boston.
Before his withdrawal, Ati-Zigi had already underlined his importance to the team with a crucial early save that preserved Ghana’s clean sheet. His resilience in remaining on the field until halftime was another reflection of his commitment during a tense World Cup opener.

Asare, however, stepped up impressively when called upon. The Hearts of Oak goalkeeper produced a composed display in the second half, helping Ghana shut out Panama before substitute Caleb Yirenkyi struck deep into stoppage time to secure a memorable victory for Carlos Queiroz’s side.
Following their return to the team’s training camp in Providence, Rhode Island, Ghana’s medical staff are expected to closely monitor Ati-Zigi’s condition. The forthcoming scan will determine the severity of the injury and provide a clearer indication of his availability for the clash against the Three Lions.
The timing of the setback could hardly be worse for the Black Stars. England arrive full of confidence after a commanding 4-2 victory over Croatia, while Ghana are already navigating the tournament without influential midfielder Thomas Partey, who missed the opening fixture.
Should Ati-Zigi be ruled out, Asare appears poised to make his first World Cup start after delivering a reassuring performance from the bench. His readiness could prove vital as Ghana prepare for one of the defining fixtures of their group-stage campaign.
