Ghana Black Stars head coach Otto Addo remains optimistic about his squad’s development, despite the team falling 2-0 to Japan in Friday’s Kirin Challenge Cup clash at the Toyota Cup. Goals from Takumi Minamino and Ritsu Doan sealed the defeat, but Addo sees value in the experience gained.
In his post-match briefing, Addo emphasized that the game was more about testing a new configuration than chasing an immediate result.
“We didn’t get the win, but the starting lineup I used was almost an entirely new side. They’ve rarely played together before, so this match was about learning,” he said.

Addo revealed that the lessons from the game will guide his adjustments ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup:
“There are still several matches left to prepare for the World Cup. I want to take the insights from today’s players and make the necessary changes. This was just one step in a larger process.”
The German tactician also praised the conduct of Japan’s players, particularly in light of the incident involving Tanaka and Ghana midfielder Francis Abu.
“I really value how Tanaka came to apologize, not just to our player but also to me as coach. It shows respect and good education. These gestures mean a lot,” Addo noted.
