Ghana have been dealt a significant setback in their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after Toulouse FC confirmed that midfielder Francis Abu has been ruled out of the tournament with a major leg injury.

The 24-year-old suffered a severe fracture during Ghana’s 2–0 defeat to Japan at the Kirin Challenge Cup on Friday. Abu collapsed in clear distress midway through the second half and was carried off on a stretcher, prompting immediate concern from teammates and supporters.

Toulouse later issued a statement confirming that the injury requires a long spell on the sidelines, with the expected recovery period extending well beyond the seven months remaining before the World Cup kicks off.

Reshaped Black Stars set sights on Seoul rest as World Cup build-up intensifies

“It’s an image no one ever wants to see,” the club said. “Selected for Ghana’s friendly matches against Japan and South Korea, Francis Abu has seen his season end abruptly. The injury he sustained will keep him out for several months, and he will sadly miss the 2026 World Cup in the United States. A very hard blow.”

The club also offered its support, adding:

“Everyone at Toulouse wishes Francis a swift and strong recovery. We’re right behind you.”

Abu has left the Ghana camp and is returning to France for further assessment before beginning what is expected to be an extended rehabilitation process. His absence creates a notable void in Ghana’s midfield options as the Black Stars build toward next summer’s tournament.

❤️ Wishing Abu Francis a speedy recovery! 🙏🏾
