Former Nigeria international John Obi Mikelhas tipped Ghanaian football icon Andre Ayew to play a significant role in reshaping the country’s football landscape should he venture into administration.
Mikel made the comments after touching down at Accra International Airport ahead of his podcast appearance in Ghana, with Ayew lined up as his special guest.
The former Chelsea midfielder believes Ayew’s extensive experience at the highest level of the game, coupled with his standing within Ghanaian football, could make him a powerful figure in the sport beyond his playing career.
Ayew has recently emerged as a potential candidate for a future Ghana Football Association presidency bid, while his growing involvement in the domestic game has seen him attend sporting events and show support for clubs and teams across the country.
The 36-year-old remains a free agent after spending the 2025/26 campaign with Dutch side NAC Breda, following a career that has taken him through several major leagues in Europe.
For Mikel, who shared the international stage with Ayew and faced him on several occasions, the former Ghana captain possesses the profile and credibility required to influence the next chapter of Ghanaian football.
“Oh, Andre Ayew is the guy, isn’t he? He’s the main man, isn’t he? You talk about the legends in Ghana football. You talk about Michael Essien, Stephen Appiah, Asamoah Gyan, the guys that I played against. Of course, then you talk about Andre. I think he’s a top player. I played against him a couple of times, I think. He’s a top player, a great human being.”
“I think if you talk about African football, I think he might be the guy that can bring some changes to Ghanaian football. So, I’m looking forward to it.”
Mikel’s glowing assessment adds to the growing conversation surrounding Ayew’s possible transition from the pitch to the boardroom.
With a wealth of international experience and years spent competing at the highest level of European football, Ayew could potentially bring a different perspective to Ghana’s football administration if he chooses to pursue a leadership role.
