Ghana’s national team is reportedly stepping up efforts to secure the international future of Chelsea’s rising star, Josh Acheampong, as part of their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.
The 19-year-old defender, who was born in London, has begun to carve out a place for himself at Stamford Bridge after earning back-to-back starts in Premier League fixtures against Liverpool and Nottingham Forest. His performances have not gone unnoticed, drawing interest from both his club and potential suitors at the international level.

Although Acheampong has been part of England’s youth setup since the Under-16s and recently featured for the Under-21 side, he remains eligible to represent Ghana or the Republic of Ireland through his family background.
This international flexibility has made him one of the most sought-after dual nationals on the radar of multiple football federations.
According to BBC, the Ghanaian technical team has identified Acheampong as a player with enormous potential and a valuable addition to their defensive ranks. Officials are believed to be working behind the scenes to convince him to switch allegiance and join the Black Stars project ahead of the World Cup.
Despite limited first-team appearances this season, Acheampong’s integration into Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea squad signals his steady rise in English football. With competition for defensive spots intensifying at the club, his progress is being closely monitored — not just in West London, but also in Accra.

If Ghana succeeds in luring Acheampong, it would mark another major coup in their ongoing bid to strengthen the team with top-tier diaspora talents ahead of football’s biggest stage.
