Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko have opted for a fresh direction on the touchline, appointing Hamza Obeng as interim head coach for the remainder of the 2025/26 campaign.

The move comes in the wake of the resignation of Prince Yaw Owusu, who had himself been serving in a caretaker capacity following the earlier departure of Karim Zito.

Karim Zito boasts holding legendary status at Asante Kotoko, despite resignation

Zito’s exit was triggered by Kotoko’s disappointing FA Cup loss to Aduana FC at the Baba Yara Stadium, a result that intensified scrutiny around the club’s technical setup.

Although Owusu stepped in with the aim of stabilizing performances, his tenure never quite gathered momentum. A run of uneven results ultimately led him to relinquish the role, with the club confirming that he had stepped aside voluntarily in what he viewed as a decision made in the team’s best interests.

Kotoko have now placed their trust in Obeng, a figure well-acquainted with the club’s philosophy through his work with the youth ranks, particularly the Young Porcupines. His immediate task will be to guide the side through the closing phase of the season and restore a sense of cohesion and competitiveness.

“In the interim, Youth Team Coach Hamza Obeng will take charge of the team for the remaining games of the season,” the club announced.

With 29 fixtures already completed in the Ghana Premier League, Kotoko currently occupy sixth position on 43 points. The Porcupine Warriors will be aiming to salvage a strong finish as they navigate the final stretch under new stewardship.
