Ghanaian forward Nathaniel Opoku experienced a night of highs and lows at Rodney Parade as Newport County succumbed to a 4-1 home defeat against Accrington Stanley in League Two.
The match got off to a nightmare start for the hosts, with Alex Henderson firing the visitors into an early lead inside two minutes. But Opoku ensured Newport didn’t stay behind for long, calmly slotting home a finish from Harrison Biggins’ pass on 35 minutes to level the score at 1–1.

The first half ended with hope intact for Newport, but the second period quickly turned sour. Isaac Sinclair restored Accrington’s advantage just six minutes after the break, and the game took a decisive turn on 69 minutes when Opoku received a red card, leaving Newport down to ten men.
The numerical disadvantage proved costly, as Paddy Madden added a third for the visitors in the 82nd minute before Isaac Heath wrapped up the scoring in stoppage time.
While the result was a heavy blow for Newport, Opoku’s individual form remains a bright spot. He has featured 15 times this season in League Two, contributing four goals and two assists, demonstrating his growing influence in the squad despite the setback.
