Asante Kotoko have firmly addressed growing speculation surrounding the status of coach Hamza Obeng, following widespread claims that he had been dropped from the club’s senior technical team.
Recent reports suggested the former Hearts of Oak assistant had been sidelined and reassigned solely to the club’s junior setup. However, the Porcupine Warriors have moved quickly to rubbish those assertions, clarifying that Obeng remains an integral part of the senior team’s backroom staff.
Providing clarity on the situation, Kotoko’s Communications Director, Sarfo Duku, explained that Obeng’s current role is a dual one, dictated largely by the football calendar.
Speaking to Kumasi-based Akoma FM, Duku stressed that there has been no demotion or removal from the senior side.
“Hamza Obeng has been assisting the senior team while the Third Division league was on hold. Now that their league has started, he will understandably focus on the juniors, as he is fully in charge of that side,” he said.

Duku further noted that Obeng’s involvement with the first team remains intact and ongoing:
“Once their fixtures are completed, he will return to support the senior team. But he will continue to serve as an assistant coach to Zito.”
Obeng joined Asante Kotoko in June 2025 after a successful spell with Vision FC, where he was instrumental in steering the Eeewo-based club to promotion to the Ghana Premier League two seasons ago. His appointment was widely seen as a strategic move aimed at strengthening both Kotoko’s youth development and senior team structure.
On the pitch, Kotoko are enjoying a solid campaign so far. After 18 matches in the ongoing Ghana Premier League season, the Kumasi giants sit fourth on the table with 31 points, firmly in contention as the title race begins to take shape.
