Beres Owusu, fresh off a season-long loan at Quevilly Rouen Métropole (National), is charting a new course in his career. The Franco-Ghanaian central defender, a product of AS Saint-Étienne’s academy, has joined Austrian Bundesliga side Grazer AK on loan with an option to buy.

In an interview with Africafoot, Owusu revealed that while Saint-Étienne wanted to keep him, he decided an exit for game time.

“They’d signed expensive players, and at my age, I want to play,” he said. “After starting all season at QRM, I didn’t want to go back to the bench. I asked for a loan, and my agency found me this ambitious project in Austria.”

About his time at QRM, he says, it was an invaluable experience: “It was a very positive experience. The season was tough, but the club was friendly, the supporters loyal. I matured a lot and learned from a demanding league.”

Austria marks his first footballing adventure abroad, and that’s no accident.

“It was my number one goal: discover a new country, culture, and style of football. Grazer AK is a historic club with top facilities and passionate fans. The top five or six clubs here could compete with Ligue 1. Salzburg and Sturm Graz could fight for European spots in France. The rest match strong Ligue 2 or mid-table Ligue 1 teams,” he noted.

Owusu also added that he is bringing to Graz his “determination, speed, composure and versatility in a three-man defensive formation.”

“I came here to start, and I already made my debut against Salzburg just days after signing,” he concluded.
